HOW IT WAS STARTED

Early in 2013 the idea for the Fire Place was born. It is run as a thrift shop accepting donations from the community and run by volunteers. The profits made are donated to Wallace and Area Fire Department to purchase equipment or education requirements.

Equipment items purchased during 2013 were a new control communication computer, screen, cables etc; 3 pike poles and 2 new oxygen tanks.

The shop was open 3 days a week from May 10th to Dec 20th.

The building had to be modified to create a shop, workshop and sorting room.

Advertising took place and donations began to arrive by the truck load!

Getting a new lease of life prevents many items from filling space at the landfill but we have to also be mindful of what will sell and what we might ultimately have to arrange to dispose.

Promotions took place to increase awareness and a Facebook page was launched as a means of communication. Newspapers were invited and articles were written.

Donated goods are placed for sale for 2 to 3 months after which they are re-directed to other charities. For example unsold towels and drapes can be used by animal shelters, flannelette sheets become diapers for babies in Haiti, nothing is wasted.

In the spring of 2018 the store moved locations again and opened up on 4 Quarry Hill drive right next to the Wallace Fire Hall, where it remains today. The combination of community support, generosity, and dedicated volunteers has allowed purchases of new helmets, a DJI Matrice 30T drone with several batteries and a communication system for search and rescue, a Gen-set generator to help make the fire station a comfort station during outages, and fire retardant coveralls.
